Yuna Yuki is your typical bubbly, energetic middle school girl... Who also just so happens to be a hero. If you argue with her that she was only a hero because she was given special powers she'll disagree with you every time. A hero to Yuna isn't just someone who goes out and saves someone, it's someone who reaches out to help people even in the most mundane of situations. This is the belief we're introduced to the young girl with and in spite of all the hardship she faces throughout her journey she never once wavers from what a hero means to her. More importantly, in spite of those hardships, she never lets them define who she as a person-- hero or otherwise.

She doesn't seem to know how to respond to situations other than what she she believes a hero would do and so a lot of her own troubles stem from this constant need to do what's right and just to make everyone else happy. It's with that in mind that we must understand that in her world there isn't meant to be a happy ending. For thousands of years girls, known as heroes, have been fighting for the sake of their world. Each time they fight, however, they sacrifice parts of their bodies. This is important because throughout her character arc we constantly see Yuna struggle with doing what she feels is right, but knows might make things worse in the end. It's not recklessness that moves her to act, but a definition of a hero that doesn't quite work in the model of her world. These are the the most important aspects to keep in mind when understanding who she is as a person.

Naturally, because of her constant "heroing", Yuna can be rather naive about the world around her and the situation she's faced with. When the girls are suddenly given magical powers by the God of their world she never once questions why they were given it or what they might mean. She understands only that she's a hero and she can help save the planet! That's the most important part to her, so when she and the others later begin losing various senses she doesn't question the doctors when they tell them they'll make a full recovery. It's not to say she doesn't worry something bad might happen, when they had to fight again she is shown to be a little uneasy about it-- She understood she could lose mose of herself, but she counted it as temporary at the time.

This naivety is also key because Yuna in general just doesn't question the people around her. Sometimes this can be a good thing, because it makes her accepting of the people around her. More so it's more detrimental to her than anything. She becomes aware of her situation by the end of the series. She knows using her power will maker lose more-and-more of herself and she even watches as her friends lose more. She still uses her powers though. Why? Because she has this constant belief of what a hero should do. It's this belief that leads her into pushing forward and punching a sun which, while pretty badass at the time, led her into a comatose state that she almost didn't wake up out of. Her belief in acting as a hero is so borderline selfless that it hurts her and her friends more than she ever intends. She'll tell them it'll be okay and that she'll figure something out and then she ultimately throws herself in the line of fire because a hero can't lose! Which we know isn't the case, but it isn't something that Yuna is quite capable of grasping.

However, as groan worthy as this behavior can be it's often endearing. Yuna is a rare sight in "main protagonist" magical girl anime in that never once does she need rescuing. She doesn't whine about her situation, but she also doesn't push it in people's faces. She's well aware that it was her choice to become a magical girl and that she wasn't actually forced (no matter what hand the Taisha may have played in it). She's the one who decided she was going to be a hero because she wanted to do something to help people. This isn't something she'll ever regret. It's part of why she doesn't bring up the fact to the others that she lost her sense of taste, it would cause them unnecessary worry about a situation that she chose to be in. Furthermore, even when faced with a situation that may get her more hurt she still tries to put on a brave face and lighten the situation. Not because she doesn't find the situation at hand serious, but if they're going to get through it they have to focus and not let it crush them.

Because of these two factors we have to realize that Yuna is both steadfast in her beliefs and narrow-minded in them. While, yes, it's a good thing to not waver from what you say it's also not a great thing. This all comes back to her continuous concept of a hero. Because she chose to be a hero she can't complain or be upset about the situation, that's her belief. She also avoids telling other people what's wrong, but pushes them to tell her and worries for them... Which is exactly what she doesn't want them to do her. None of these change throughout the course of the show. While she does become more openly upset about their situation, she also holds onto what a hero "needs" to do as opposed to what a hero might want to do. One of the best examples of this is during her second use of mankai. At this time she's actively aware that it's detrimental to her health, but doesn't hesitate to use that power to defeat vortexes. Everyone else, however, responded naturally and wanted to beat her because why would you do that. This continues even later when she continuously uses the same power to try and talk Togo home from going half-insane (justifiably half-insane at that).

While heroing is a constant part of Yuna's life, what a hero does/is isn't the only parts we have to consider. Yes, she literally defines all of her daily actions through the hero club's five tenents, but before things got serious she was just a regular school girl. To best put who she is as a person into perspective, when Yuna first meets Togo she happily bombards her with all sorts of questions and offers of friendship. Then they decided to start a club together that was to help people (with the help of future members). At first people thought this setup was odd-- What was a hero club? But the energetic, happy members of the club they ended up meeting turned it from something that would be odd anywhere else but loved within the school. This was largely in part from Yuna's outgoing behavior and her willingness to jump into any situation to help people, regardless of what it was. This friendly atemposphere she creates is part of the reason Karin can't help but come back or decide to stay within the school.

On the opposite extreme, this overly enthusiastic nature can be stressing to the people around her. While the hero club members we're initially met with understand this, Karin is constantly overwhelmed by Yuna's antics (however, she also has some issues with anxiety). Even the other hero club members sometimes don't know what to do with Yuna. The best example of this is for a few episodes they had a debate on what they wanted to do for their school festival. They were all supposed to think of ideas and bring it up by the next meeting, but Yuna in all her excitement has already decided they're doing a play without ever mentioning it. So when the others stare at her in confusion she hurriedly tries to explain it away that "she just thought it and got so excited that she thought they were doing it". Thankfully, the others agree because this is Yuna, but this isn't exactly a one note thing. She's seen pushing others to admit their thoughts or feelings and while it's not maliciously she doesn't know how to take no for an answer. She even admits at one point that she needs to learn to butt out!

Yuna is also a rather silly girl. While a lot of this is who she is naturally, there are times she exaggerates it for the sake of others. Sometimes she can get excited and do something outrageous at spur of the moment, but that's natural Yuna. Others might stare at her funny and question if she's all right, but this isn't exactly necessarily bad. It's the other half of it where she deems that she "doesn't know what to do" and thus decides to do whatever dumb thing she can think of to make other people laugh. She goes as far as to say she has her own comedy show for it. This behavior is part of the reason that the other girls, outside of perhaps Togo, don't know when to take her seriously or not. Instead of accomplishing what she wants sometimes she just makes the situation even more confusing or worse. Luckily for her, the show stays centered around these main girls so they're all used to these antics... But it's not good for when you're meeting someone new or trying to get others to take you seriously.

At the end of the day, however, Yuna is often a person people look to for when they need a little bit more hope. While even her best friend, Togo, questions her ideals at the end of the series it's also something she loved about Yuna. When she was down and out, it was always Yuna who brought herself back up by remembering what she loved about being a hero. Or, more so, her friends and the world they lived on. In spite of how bad things were she loved that world and neither her or Togo were wrong in saying that what made Yuna come back was willpower alone. She's not exactly a leader, she lets Fuu take that role and she's good at it. What she is and will always be will be a willful girl who doesn't let the pains of life stand in her way. If it's something she chose to do, she'll stand by it. That doesn't make life less difficult, but as long as she has that to believe in and her friends she'll be all right.
